Course 2: Let’s build a computer of our own
And you get to keep it for your home lab
This course takes the fundamentals of computer components and literally puts them together while learning how to disassemble a whole computer, identify the various connections, and re-assemble the computer in proper working order. We use this “removal first” approach because more often than not, parts are damaged during the removal process rather than the installation process.
It is REQUIRED to have a “Home Lab” (tinkering) computer for this course. The desktop computer the student assembles in this course is theirs to keep for their “home lab“, a computer they’re encouraged to learn basic and advanced technician skills on, taught in courses 3 and 4. They will also be provided a starter toolkit and 8GB flash drive, which are also theirs to keep. The computer will be modern and capable of running operating systems through Windows 10, including Linux if they so choose.
- Required Materials: Toolkit, desktop computer, monitor, keyboard, mouse (all provided by RAD Computers, which will be owned by the student)
- Disassembling and reassembling a computer
- Installation of various operating systems, from Windows XP through Windows 11, plus at least 2 Linux Distros
- Introduction to computer maintenance, understanding what “bottlenecking” is and signs of component failure
Estimated time for course completion: 16 hours
Student is required to visit our Mesa Computer Repair Facility for hands-on training.
